My Approach to Counselling
Choosing a counsellor is about more than finding someone with the right qualifications or therapeutic approach. It's about finding someone you feel comfortable with, someone you can build a trusting relationship with, and someone who will meet you where you are.
Every person who comes to counselling has their own experiences, needs and way of coping. Because of this, I don't believe therapy should follow a fixed formula. I adapt the way we work to suit you.
Some clients come to therapy because they need a space to process what's been happening in their lives. We might explore relationships, work, family, grief or the challenges that week has brought. These sessions can feel reflective, supportive and sometimes we even laugh together. Therapy doesn't always have to feel heavy.
Other clients come because they're living with the effects of trauma. They may be experiencing panic attacks, anxiety, dissociation, depersonalisation or derealisation, and feel like their body is constantly on high alert. In these sessions, we may spend more time understanding your nervous system, recognising how your body has learnt to protect you, and helping you develop a greater sense of safety.
Whatever brings you to counselling, my aim is the same: to create a space where you feel heard, accepted and able to make sense of your experiences without judgement.
The therapeutic relationship
Research consistently tells us that one of the most important factors in successful therapy is the relationship between counsellor and client.
I don't expect you to trust me from the very first session.
Trust develops over time, and that's okay.
If something doesn't feel right, if you're unsure about the pace of therapy, or if you're finding it difficult to open up, we can talk about it together. Therapy isn't something you have to get right, and you don't have to pretend you're okay if you're not.
Person-Centred Counselling
At the heart of my work is the belief that you are the expert on your own life.
Rather than telling you what you should do, I'll work alongside you with empathy, honesty and acceptance. Together we'll explore what's happening for you, helping you understand yourself more deeply and make choices that feel right for you.
Trauma-Informed Therapy
Being trauma-informed means recognising that many of our thoughts, feelings and behaviours have developed as ways of coping.
Instead of asking, "What's wrong with you?", we'll gently explore what has happened to you and how those experiences may still be affecting you today.
If you're living with trauma, I won't ask you to revisit painful memories before you're ready.
We'll work at a pace that feels manageable, paying attention to your nervous system as well as your thoughts and emotions.
If you become overwhelmed, shut down or dissociate during a session, we'll slow things down. There is no pressure to push through. We'll focus on helping you feel grounded and supported before moving forward.
If you're experiencing the effects of trauma, you can find out more on my Trauma Counselling page.
An Integrative Approach
Every person is different, which means no single counselling approach works for everyone.
Alongside person-centred counselling, I draw on a range of therapeutic ideas and approaches where they feel helpful. This allows therapy to be tailored to your individual needs rather than expecting you to fit into one particular model.
Our work will always be guided by what feels most helpful for you.
Online Counselling
I work exclusively online with adults across the UK.
Many people are surprised by how connected online counselling can feel. Being in your own familiar environment can make it easier to talk, and it allows you to access support wherever you are in the country.
All you need is a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable.
Working Together
Beginning counselling can feel like a big step, and it's completely understandable if you're feeling nervous or unsure.
You don't need to have everything figured out before we meet.
You don't need to know exactly what to say.
Together, we'll create a space where you can begin making sense of your experiences, develop greater self-understanding, and move towards a way of living that feels more connected, compassionate and authentic to you.
